August Book Club: Where The Crawdads Sing

August Book Club: Where The Crawdads Sing

Welcome to our August choice for the Well Read Company Book Club!

Delia Owen’s Where The Crawdads Sing focuses on Kya, the ‘Marsh Girl’, an outsider in a quiet fishing village in North Carolina in 1969.

She lives in solitude away from the rest of society in a secluded hut, with only animals for company. Her peaceful and private existence is then dramatically interrupted when a popular young man in the village is found dead - and she is immediately suspected.

Slowly, Kya opens up to two young local men who offer her a new way of life. But her true love remains the natural world, which is described throughout the novel in a beautiful and haunting way. This coming-of-age novel charts our relationship with nature, the effects of loneliness and even the process of a murder investigation. The intermingling of many different genres, along with the savage and stunning writing, means this is a book that will appeal to readers of many different tastes!

While Crawdads does include a love triangle, what we loved about this book was that the crux of the story remains Kya’s personal development and her relationship with the natural world. What remains most important to her is her own sense of self, rather than any relationship she could have with a man. This makes the novel a perfect choice for discussion between friends and family, as it imparts important messages.

Owen’s novel has topped The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2019 and 2020 for a staggering 32 non-consecutive weeks. Also, the novel has been adapted into a film coming out next summer starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (of Normal People fame) as the protagonist Kya. We can’t wait to see the stunning marsh-land setting in the novel on screen!
